Construction recently started for sidewalk extensions on Atlantic and Clinton Streets in Cobble Hill. This is part of DOT’s larger project to calm traffic in Downtown Brooklyn, in the effort to improve safety and traffic conditions. One of the more recently completed sidewalk extensions was at Smith and Bergen, which was met with mostly positive response from pedestrians, and now that the weather’s nice, a fruit cart has parked in the extra sidewalk space.

  1. Looks like they are going to begin transforming the corner of Court and Atlantic very soon … granite curbs dropped off and cuts have been started on the asphalt. Anything that slows cars coming down Court is a good thing. When the lights are green I have seen cars hitting 35-40 mph thru that intersection.

I don’t get this either. Creating these extensions is not the solution to calm traffic in downtown Brooklyn. Atlantic Ave is used as a thorough fare. It leads to bridges, the BQE and other heavily used streets by cars. These concrete extensions to me aren’t the solution but a big waste of $!

  3. The one at Bergen and Smith is dangerous. I’ve seen several cars go up on the curb (barely missing pedestrians) trying to make the left off of Smith onto Bergen. It is too narrow. Pedestrian word of warning: Do not stand anywhere near the curb of those neckdowns.

  4. They really need to do something about pedestrian safety on Atlantic from Flatbush/Fourth Ave up to Boerum Pl. There are already a few of these “traffic calming” curbs…but it’s still scary. Maybe enforcing a 30 MPH speed limit would help.

  5. “How exactly do these sidewalk jutouts “improve safety and traffic conditions”? — when you are crossing the street against the light – you have shorter distance and fewer lanes to dash across.
