Right now the Whole Foods site in Gowanus seems to be damned if it don’t. In addition to needing a full new building permit from the DOB, the DEC still has to approve the grocer’s plans to build on a wetlands. Even though construction can’t actually begin on the store, in mid-March the DOB put a stop work order on the property that’s only been partially lifted for contractors to make the site safe by erecting a better fence. The DOB entry on the stop work order says that “hazardous conditions were observed during inspection” and that there was a “failure to safeguard public & property” because the construction fence was down. (The fence’s failings have been well-documented by us and Gowanus Lounge.) The ceremonial groundbreaking for the store happened in ’06, and plenty of people are wondering whether it’s ever actually going to be a reality. With that in mind, it’s poll time:

  1. “As for the marvelous judgement of the CEO of Whole Foods, John Mackey, think again. That idiot got in huge trouble for posing as someone else on the internet praising his company and bashing competitors. It was a terrible embarrassment for the company.”

    Totally retarded and irrelevant response.
Yes because posing in the internet is the same thing as making million dollar decisions about real estate. And you make it sound like decisions are done in the CEO vacuum.

The ironic part is your bashing the CEO and WF anonymously.

    “Uh….they are a corporation and I’m not?”

No you follow real estate in a blog site. They make millions.

“They are a 3.7 BILLION dollar organization”

Great you can Google and read numbers. I’m sure you have cost analysis of your idea? Including relevant information including zoning laws, taxes, market study, community support, etc, etc?

Bottom line is, you are making grand recommendation with no proof whatsoever yours is a better idea or even feasible.

    I can do that too… watch…

“They should just lower the price of the congestion plan. And it will get through”

There you like that. I pulled one out my butt.

  2. “There are reasons they are Whole Foods and you are not.”

Sorry, but I actually do have better business judgement than that, 4:05. I just exercise it in another industry than organic groceries, yes it’s true.

“They did not become succesful by throwing away millions of dollars every time they meet an obstacle.”

No but as they became successful they learned to pocked 100s of millions of dollars for developing future sites. Again, what they paid for this site is -chump change- for them. They are a 3.7 BILLION dollar organization.

“There are reasons they are Whole Foods and you are not.”

    Uh….they are a corporation and I’m not?

So what if they have a lot of capital. They did not become succesful by throwing away millions of dollars every time they meet an obstacle.

Not to mention what location will they move? Will this supposed site will not cause the same issues or even worse new and more expensive issues.

You make it sound like these things are done overnight for pennies.

There are reasons they are Whole Foods and you are not.

  5. It’s called re-selling the land, 2:27 and they could have sold to someone whose business would not require such strict regulations regarding the landfill and toxins. I.e. not a grocery.
