We hope this space isn’t cursed and this new cafe does better than the last one! A tipster pointed out that Danny’s, the cafe to replace the short-lived F. Martinella, is opening today, and when we stopped by this morning there were a few customers checking it out. Any early predictions for this one?

  1. I went today. Horrible. I was really hoping for a basic diner so close to my house. There are no changes to the inside, and it makes absolutely no sense. I walked in and three people asked if they could help me. Uh… I dunno. Do you have food? A menu? Is there table service? Where? Is this a deli? Do I order from you or over there? Why can’t you work the register yet? Who are all these employees?

Then I order something and no one seems to be making it. I’m told it’s cooked downstairs. Someone emerges and gives me a plate of lukewarm-to-cold food with no utensils, napkins, condiments, etc. It’s literally as though the place is put together by someone who’s never been in a restaurant. Incredible.

  2. i still don’t think the layout works for a diner with all those seats in the back. Also the separate food and coffee counters require them to have like 10 people working there at a time. the old place always felt over-staffed but not particularly efficient. i’m going to check out the food tonite so will reserve judgement. and i also agree that a good noodle and dumpling place would kill in this neighborhood … we are poorly served in the area with only the ghetto chinese joints around (i.e. picture menus, fried chicken wings, MSG on everything, etc)

  3. I agree with BH76 that a dumpling and noodle place would have been nice, but if it’s a good diner then that’d be a useful thing to have around too. (Anyone know whether they’ll be open late? That stretch of Court Street can feel pretty desolate at night.)

In any case, there were people in the seats by the windows when I walked past this morning, so I guess that’s a decent sign.
