police-car-brooklyn-bridge-0410.jpgThis ain’t good. A crappy economy combined with a municipal budget crisis sounds like a recipe for a rise in crime. Sure enough, that’s what’s going on in Brooklyn right now, according to The Daily News. The number of robberies in the 84th Precinct (Downtown Brooklyn and Brooklyn Heights) more than doubled in the first three months of the year. In the 72nd precinct (Windsor Terrace and Sunset Park), burglaries were up 120% in the same period, and in the 67th Precinct (Flatbush) they were up 51%. “You have all these kids hanging out without jobs and it’s combustible; that and a decrease in the number of cops on the streets is a bad combination,” said City Councilwoman Letitia James. “That combination has lead to, and will lead to, an increase in violent crime.” In related news, the man accused of two rapes last month in Bed Stuy and Clinton Hill was taken into custody over the weekend.

  1. Lech, first of all, that is scary. But in attempt to make some humor of the situation, since the mugging was “attempted” does that mean your wife kicked the would-be mugger’s ass?

  2. Petebklyn — You’re very right about the manipulation of the data to make the story more exciting… but even if it were just ONE of the following, “robberies, burglaries, grand larcenies OR auto thefts,” it would be pretty bad. I don’t enjoy any of those.

  3. Look on the bright side, the value of your home is going up. So will your property value tax! Someone has to pay these officers overtime or are renters suppose to go around making collections?

  4. ok – I going to call Brownstoner on this. I think this an incorrect or at least misleading headline. Very typical of inflammatory stories in all media – and understandable after reading the Daily News story.

His headline says Crime Rises across the Board.

However – brooklyn north precints are up 1.91% over last year and south down .73%. Essentially no change in crime.

Read the Daily News story carefully and see how easily reporters can use stats and make you think very different from reality…..but you have to read what they say very carefully.
the sentence “nearly 70% of all Brooklyn’s 23 precincts saw a 20% or higher hump in robberies, burglaries, grand larcenies OR auto thefts”….
does sounds really awful until you remember the “OR”…
Only one of those crime categories up that much in the precinct for statement to be true but others may be down just as much or not more- . So total crimes really not changed. One precinct may be up in auto but down in burglaries. Other precinct would be opposite.

So easy to manipulate and get dramatic… THen add the high profile/widely reported crime incidents and they have managed to provoke sense of fear and doom.

Be alert ,folks ,to how statastics are used and manipulated to lead someone to a conclusion….whether crime, economic, etc., etc. etc.
