A conservative radio talk show host called Jay Mundy describes his first visit to Williamsburg earlier this week. It’s kinda hilarious until you realize that people this close-minded actually exist. Some out-takes:
It is a place that is now the official hipster neighborhood of the United States of America…I never thought that could exist here…I couldn’t believe it. It is so left wing, how do I even describe it…If you could see what this place looks like…Just think of the most left-wing hippie, lunatic, nutcase; get that in your head and multiply it by thousands. It is extremely scary…Tattoos and people who are high on drugs all day and they are wearing weird clothes, like something you can’t imagine, like a Hollywood picture, but here it was in the real world. Someone I was with said it’s like all the misfits in this country went to this neighborhood. There’s graffiti everywhere cuz they think graffiti is art…They are extreme leftists. I’ve never seen so many sick weirdos gathered in one place. They’re all doing drugs all day. They have their hair died and tattoos so they can’t have a job so they’re all living on public assistance…They love Obama and the leftists and hate police power. They’re carefree people. If I lived there a day, I tell you I would be in jail for murder…They don’t believe in toilet paper there because it hurts the environment…I think even some left-of-center Democrats would be grossed out.
Someone better explain to this guy the difference between a hipster and a hippie. You can check Part 1 and Part 2 of the interview on YouTube.
I read that yesterday too. There will always be idiots and morons who can’t be trusted to act like human beings when faced with people who don’t live their lifestyle. I don’t think this incident is the norm, and I would hope the community speaks out against it. We have enough problems without caring if men wear hot pink shorts or young people in billyburg have tatoos.
“Did anyone else see the Bed Stuy gay bashing story from the Thursday Blogwrap thread….”
Yeah – i did Dave. Was going to ask you your thoughts/experiences regarding this.
J/M at Marcy Ave is solidly southside williamsburg.
Did anyone else see the Bed Stuy gay bashing story from the Thursday Blogwrap thread….
“Recently some white newcomers to our block, were gay bashed in front of their brownstone at 9:30 at night. Not surprisingly, they’re moving out. I find this even more disturbing than the increase in local muggings that have occurred over the last year or so. Sure, these guys dressed flamboyantly – Big Joe noticed one of them strolling down the street in a pair of hot pink short shorts the other day. But just like a woman who dresses provocatively is not asking to be raped, neither is a lesbian, gay or transgender person asking to get beat up for dressing up. Interestingly, if you look at Bed-Stuy apartment shares on Craigslist, you’ll discover that at least half the people who’ve recently moved to the neighbourhood are gay”
I believe the blogger and Big Joe live somewhere close to the Marcy Station of the J/M line from their other posts…far north end of bed Stuy. Anyone else know any details about this?
haha – did you invent some sort of hipster repellant dave? please share!
dh, you needn’t remind me. I see them walking up the street. Luckily, there aren’t any on my block. 🙂
It amazes me that people think hipsters are ONLY in williamsburg/bushwick.
I was at a friends place in Bed Stuy – Bedford and Gates and there were ALOT more hipsters walking around there then you would see at any given time on Lorimer, Leonard, Manhattan or Graham Aves (West of Union Ave is a diff story)
Yes Dave, you live amongst hipsters!!
I remember when the same things were said about Wash Sq in the late 50s-early 60s. Kids in expensive suede jackets hitting you up for a dime, feet unwashed, teeth green (ugh!). I never got close enough to judge how much they bathed but the rants from the 35+ group were identical to those on today’s thread.
