Daniel Squadron, a Democrat running for State Senate in the 25th District, which stretches from Carroll Gardens to Williamsburg, and across the river to Battery Park City and the Lower East Side, has made Brooklyn Bridge Park a key issue in his campaign. Yesterday he laid out his vision for the park, which did not include additional private housing. “Our communities, our borough and our city deserve a real, world-class park with year-round recreation without having our waterfront turned into a de facto backyard for luxury condo towers,” he said. So how to pay for it? City and State dollars that he vows to secure and the hotel, which he supports. (He’s supported by the hotel industry, members of which stood with him yesterday.) His vision also includes parkland designation at the State level; year-round recreation options; a commission on linking Governor’s Island, Hudson and East River Parks and BBP; and “an immediate public 30-day audit of projected costs and revenues, including those expected from the existing development at 360 Furman, the proposed hotel and other potential revenue generation within the park to prevent delay and ensure the park’s operating budget is sustainable,” according to a press release from his office. Folks will be re-evaluating the park later in the week, too. On Friday morning, Project for Public Spaces will hold a workshop on waterfront park planning.

  1. Not sure whether I agree with the guy, but I commend him for challenging our longtime incumbent ( Martin Connor) in the entrenched Albany scene.
Everyone likes to complain about Albany, but we keep voting the same guys back.

  2. I guess you guys just figured out the answer to all this…lure Trump over here somehow and that will solve all the problems. He’ll get the infrastructure done and all the beautification around it. The key is that he must get the OK for a big residential/commercial/hotel development. These are called tradeoffs. All very realistic in terms of valuable real estate.

    I’m not being facetious here.

Squadron needs to shave the beard and wear a “power tie” for greater credibility!

  3. There’s a fresh idea!
Lets hold a planning workshop for a project that has already used over twenty-five million dollars in public funds for design fees.
    hopeless, hopeless, hopeless.

meanwhile, if you want to see how it is done right, visit the southern part of Riverside Park, by the new Trump buildings, that new parkland opened yesterday, it is incredibly beautiful. As usual we are outer slobonia compared to Manhattan.

  4. good luck on getting Manhattan to give up the cash cow it has in Battery Park City(yes those buildings) that provides the cash for the Hudson River Park. This may be the most politically naive statement I have seen in a long time. It will happen right after real reform in the Albany legislature.
You need a $100,000,000 to re do the Intrepid…its part of the Hudson River Park- no problem you need $1,000,000 for something in Brooklyn no way. So if you support the concept of Battery Park City, that means you can’t have three such buildings in Brooklyn? The city parks are underfunded now adding another park just spreads the same amount of money around. The Brooklyn Bridge Park’s originally charter REQUIRED that it be self sustaining for operating expenses. Albany is how many Billions(with a b) in deficit next year. You know you can always get income from a parking lot…
