But, beneath the bitchiness, there are real issues at stake. The new Duane Reade is part of a chainstore invasion; perhaps inevitable following the money the new youthful residents have brought in. In fact, there is already a Duane Read there, tucked away in a corner of the neighbourhood now dominated by giant, new and expensive apartment buildings. CVS Duane Reade’s main rival is also building a store. Fast food chain Subway has opened on Bedford, as has the American Apparel clothing chain. To cap it all, it is rumoured Starbucks may be coming next year, replacing a bagel shop. If that happens, the hipster apocalypse may be nigh.
Presumably these stores won’t stay in business, though, unless the locals spend their money in them.
chase atm!
this article is old news. Starbucks is always rumored to be moving in
Yup, I bring my greens from Manhattan on the way home from work. I don’t use Fresh Direct…never would for meat or produce. No big deal.
Walgreens Co. purchased Duane Reade for $1.075 billion, including assumption of debt, in February 2010.
In June 2010, former Duane Reade Chief Executive Officer Anthony Cuti and CFO William Tennant were convicted of securities fraud occurring in the time period between November 2000 and June 2005. They are facing up to 20 years in prison. Cuti is to be sentenced on November 15, 2010, and Tennant is to be sentenced on December 6, 2010
(I couldn’t find results of sentencing)
@ dirtyhipster..hysterical about bedstuy! so friggin’ true and I live here. dave you’ve got to eat that one…maybe along with some of those local greens from butternut…oh nevermind.
Kings is a really good pharmacy. I will continue to buy there. I hate the way Duane Reade puts all the necessities so far from the exit, on the lower level, and the prices are insane, but often they are the most convenient choice, since they are on every corner. Can’t stand them. Put the tampons and earplugs up front, you jerks.
You just reminded me that I still have a $5 off coupon for a $15 purchase this Duane Reade location!
dumb article. the subway and the american apparel have been there for years , and there was already a duane reade on kent. the upstairs part of this duane reade is pretty small, so i don’t think it affects much.
i’ll be very curious to see if starbucks comes in. there are already plenty of very good coffee shops on bedford and a starbucks really isn’t needed.
I think Williamsburg would be a good location for a WalMart. I bet it’s be one of the highest grossing stores in the chain.
“This whole discussion is asinine.”
you live in bed stuy – you’ve grown accustomed to not buying anything you consume in your own neighborhood, let alone having a choice for where to buy it.
