It also notes that the salt “can irritate the respiratory tract and causes hypertension,” and that it’s potentially toxic.

Wow absolutely remove. Read an article that says dogs that eat the salt after a snow storm can die or have serious health complications. Best to remove of everyone.

I’m implying the neighbors should figure out what they *really* want and demand it… don’t say covering is not an option if the issue is drifting salt in the wind. In this case, the CORRECT covering of the salt is required. Requiring monitoring and enforcement (call for this, demand it as a requirement of the company… i.e., they pay for this monitoring).
If the actual issue (as is hinted at by MANY of the petition signature comments) is that the neighbors don’t like the port operating as an industrial area and they want their “view” back…. well… they should say that, but obviously I can see why they would want to fake a different reason.

Some background on the situation.
I’m aware that the petition asks for it to be removed entirely. I’m just pointing out that American Stevedoring decided a while back that their response to the neighbors would be to use a tarp but that obviously has not kept the salt from being blown all over the place. They have a bad track record so far, is all.
Tybur6: I’m not sure I get what you are implying. I would think that some kind of indoor storage (a shed of some kind?) would be better.
Get Terence Koh on the case:

Hasn’t salt been stored there for way longer than 2009?
This is just pouring salt in the wound.
By the way, some of the petition signature comments are truly precious.
For example: “I live across the street. My front door isn’t working, thanks to salty air. And the trucks are keeping us up all night. This is a residential neighborhood.”
WHAT!?! You live across from a large PORT! WHAT?!?!
CG, according to the petition, they aren’t willing to settle for having it covered all the time. Seems like a silly demand.
