Closing Bell: No Straight Pride

Brooklyn Pride may have filled the streets in June, but the first Straight Pride parade yielded slightly smaller attendance: zero. The parade was set start at 10AM on Sunday and follow “the same route as the annual Caribbean labor day parade,” according to a press release. The parade was organized, or at least conceived of, by a Reggae group whose song was banned (it apparently had lyrics advocating violence against gays — we haven’t heard it). They countered that gays are targeting Reggae groups “because 99 percent of the artists are African American.” What a mess. At least one brave, gay blogger showed up to find the meeting spot empty. He had this to say: “Damn, and here I wanted a Straight Pride t-shirt.”

biff, that’s great! dibs, it’s big, been in the media quite often. ENY, I’m certainly not disagreeing, just trying to get the terminology right, along with the fact it’s not just one artist but many, ya heard?
Dave: You disappoint! This has been an issue for quite some time.
But then again, I’ve never in my life heard any reggae ever played in any gay bar or club. I have seen a video of Cher in dreadlocks though.
This has got to be a troll posting!!!!
ditto, perhaps your girlfriend got mad thinking you were referring to her boyfriend as “A frickin’ German” rather than “African German”!
YAAAWWWNNN
I’ve never heard of this gay/reggae hate thing!!!
“There’s not just one artist that is under attack by anti-gay groups, there are several, including Beenie Man, Buju Banton (love him), Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel, Capleton, and Sizzla (another fave).”
Well, since these guys subscribe to the general disdain for homosexuals common to many West Indians, and aren’t afraid to say so in their lyrics, it’s not too hard to understand why anti-gay groups aren’t among their biggest fans. Hey, I like a lot of their music, too, but facts are facts.
I once had a dominican girlfriend who had dated a black guy from Germany. She insisted on calling him African American and got all pissy with me when I pointed out he couldn’t be.
Jeez, can we get this straight (no pun intended)? In order to be African American, one must also be American. Most reggae artists are not American, they are Jamaican. Therefore they would be Black, not African American.
There’s not just one artist that is under attack by anti-gay groups, there are several, including Beenie Man, Buju Banton (love him), Elephant Man, Vybz Kartel, Capleton, and Sizzla (another fave).
The whole thing is a mess. Cultural imperialism anyone?
“We’re here, we drink beer, get used to it!!”
