Closing Bell: Michelle Dines in Brooklyn
As we tweeted earlier, the First Lady had lunch at the world-famous Front Street pizza spot Grimaldi’s today. Not surprisingly, traffic to the area was restricted for a while. No word on what kind of pie she ordered though.

Wow, funny to read you all talking about New Haven pizza. I grew up there. Brooklynstyle, Bar does have decent pizza, but better than Pepe’s or even Sally’s? Um, no.
Pepe’s White Clam Pie is to die for.
But I wouldn’t say New Haven has better pizza than NY, or Grimaldi’s in particular. Different animals.
@mopar The neighborhood is Fulton Ferry, and there most certainly are plenty of kids living at the Eagle Warehouse co-op, directly across the street from Grimaldi’s.
As for calling in your order: When they are busy, they just don’t answer the phone.
Honestly, just call in your order. Waltz past the line, get your pie, eat it on the docks. (Or now in the park.) All the pleasure of Grimaldi’s without any of the pain.
I’ve never found the guys at Grimaldi’s that unpleasant… and that includes the ONE TIME i went during a peak time. They are particular, for sure, especially when it comes to seating you etc. (And even the grouchy old guy helped us out one night with a late-comer that required a 5th seat.)
I wonder if you guys bring the nasty out in these guys?
I also like their pizza quite a bit.
Just don’t go at noon and 6:30pm.
It’s in a kind of no-man’s land between the Heights and Dumbo, right by the Jehovah Witness’s Watchtower operation. No kids, no neighborhood.
Clams on a pizza is the same idea as salt on a pizza. Basically adding the salty taste to contrast the sweetness of a tomato sauce.
I used to go to Grimaldi’s when it was Patsy’s, before Patsy’s sued. The pizza was very good back then. Talking early 1990s. It is not in the heights. I guess you’d say it’s in DUMBO.
EW what is clam pie? that sounds horrible (on so many levels). i hope some of the neighborhood kids got to at least meet michelle, possibly chow down a slice with her tho. where is this place located btw? if it’s brooklyn hites, then please shoot me now.

New Haven Clam Pie is unbeatable, and the pizza is good too.
In defense of Grimaldi’s, I have to say that our pie there was exquisite (I like them genuinely burned in spots)…but worth the wait? (even without Michelle there that day)…no, especially given the epic rudeness of the waiters. It wasn’t the “cute,” schticky rudeness of Peter Luger’s old-timers; it was genuinely nasty, and my out-of-town visitor from gentle Vermont felt quite shaken, poor dear. Of course, if it were possible for them to become any more insufferable, they now will be…
