Tonight at 6 p.m. at Restoration Plaza, the Landmarks Preservation Committee CB3 Landmarks Committee is hosting a community meeting with LPC, Bed Stuy’s landmark coalition and residents. This is the next step in the effort to expand current landmarking in the neighborhood; check out a map of the proposed boundaries here. Bed Stuy Patch has a detailed article about the history of Bed Stuy landmarking and its hopeful future. According to LPC executive director Kate Daly, I think that Bed-Stuy is a priority for the Commission this time, so we want to make sure that we are in partnership with the residents and elected officials and community so that we can move forward. 1. Wow. It was quite a turnout – standing room only – I had to sit on the floor (right next to the sandwiches!). A lot of questions were asked – most by folks who wanted to know how landmarking will affect their homes. There was only one person there who spoke about his constitutional rights being taken away. It looked like the Historic folks and the Landmarking folks were very surprised and happy at the size of the crowd. They said that the next step is inviting homeowners directly (thru the mail) to come to meetings to get their input. I think in about 10-15 more years a good chunk of Bed-Stuy will be landmarked for sure.
