The video above appears to show stills from inside Erasmus Hall Academy, which was mentioned in one of Christopher Gray’s Streetscapes columns last year: “Passers-by can glimpse it only through iron gates, but the 1786 Erasmus Hall Academy, on Flatbush Avenue off Church in Brooklyn, appears to be the oldest school structure in New York. Empty for years and now dilapidated, the academy building is a designated landmark, enclosed within the vast courtyard of the Gothic-style Erasmus Hall High School, another landmark. Together they anchor a pinwheel of scholastic architectural history spanning two centuries.” Earlier this week Lost City reported that funding for the building’s restoration may be coming down the pike.

The Wall Street Journal more recently reported on a state grant that will jumpstart renovation of the academy on Feb. 1. This video was created by a reporter on the site inspection last year, and the Journal reported on this via video as well: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704698004576104241654611156.html
So cool! Oldest school in NYC! The Dutch Reformed Church across the street on the corner of Church and Flatbush is the oldest house of worship in continuous use in NYC, I’ve heard. This was the center of the town of Flatbush in the colonial Dutch countryside back in the days of New Amsterdam and it’s really amazing that these buildings are still here.
