The artists who thought up last summer’s Gowanus Dumpster Pools are now tackling a different, but no less unique, project this summer. Glassphemy! is an installation in a well-kept Gowanus location where participants chuck beer bottles, donated by local bars, from a high platform into a clear, rectangular box, made of bulletproof glass and steel. (They can aim at viewers standing safely on the other side.) There are lights at the bottom of the box, which react to the bottles as they shatter. The shards of glass will then be recycled, in an effort to make recycling a more visceral, exciting experience. The creator, David Belt, was initially inspired to construct Glassphemy! after an urban planning meeting where panelists were wondering what they could put in vacant lots that would keep people from breaking glass.

  1. and what if i chuck a bottle down there, miss the “bulletproof glass and steel” box entirely but it lands in that crowd to the left? or what if it hits one of those tube rail thingys and breaks before entering the box, sending glass all over the place? Sorry to be so cynical but this one was not well thought out.

  2. i actually think it’s pretty cool.. tho i could see someone getting drunk enough to think it’s a pool, or a vat of chuck e. cheese balls and jumping in into it!

    bring back the dumpster pools!!
