Even when there’s a little rain, there’s still plenty of action at The Flea, as this girl found out last Saturday. Before it cleared and turned into a beautiful afternoon, she scored this fabulous floral-themed valise. Same story this week: It’ll probably rain a bit but that will only give you an edge in the scavenger hunt and mean less competition at the booths of the new food vendors starting this week in Fort Greene on Saturday and in Dumbo on sunday. The Brooklyn Flea is held on Saturdays at the Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Fort Greene (176 Lafayette Avenue between Clermont and Vanderbilt Avenues; take the C train to Clinton-Washington or the G train to Clinton Avenue) and on Sundays in Dumbo at 76 and 81 Front Street.
I thought the merch in Dumbo was comparable to Ft. Greene, but the lighting indoors is pretty dim, not really showing off the stuff well I think. I loved the music playing in 76. All in all, I had a great time.
I am sorry to hear this, understand your decision, though it is disappointing. Transportation Alternatives may be a non-profit, but they need income. Donations and memberships are not enough.
Is there any way to minimize bikes on your neighbors’ scaffolding and fencing? I saw over 30 on my quick walk at 1 pm yesterday. More bikes were chained to street signs, etc. I know signs can be ineffective, but they may be a deterrent. It might take time and Loughlin would likely have to agree, but maybe NYC DOT’s CityRacks free program can install (more) bike racks on Loughlin’s block?
Transportation Alternatives, which was providing the service, charged us around $150 a day last year for it; this year they wanted to charge us several times that, which is just not feasible. Most people just lock their bikes to the school fence.
What happened to the bike valet or bike racks? Haven’t seen them this year. Bikers then use anything available in the area, including residential fencing.
Yup. School policy.
Brownstoner – How come dogs aren’t allowed @ the Flea on Saturdays? Seems a little bizarre but I’m guessing it has to do with it being in a school yard?
Have to admit a comment like this leaves us scratching our head–have you really looked around? There’s tons of old stuff at the Fort Greene location–sure there’s lots of food and some newer stuff, but there are 140 -150 vendors so even if only 1/3 sold old stuff that’s still 50 booths! Can you be more specific about what you think is missing? And the 76 Front location in Dumbo is nothing but vintage clothing, jewelry and antiques. 100%! The 81 Front location has newer stuff and food, mixed in with some old stuff.
Wishing you guys fair weather this weekend!
I kind of miss the flea market being on Sunday, I must admit…
The couple of times we’ve gone through the market since it started up again, I haven’t really found anything that sparked a flame.
One of the vendors who I bought from last year (she has some good mid-century type Americana periodically) said that I would probably not like the Dumbo market since it’s geared to a younger crowd and has a lot of young fashions.
But, I kind of feel the outdoor market has a little too much of that too. Oh, well, what’s an old bag to do?
I guess I’d love to have a Porte de Vanves or Cours Saleya kind of flea market (low key but with some really nice things…i.e. antiques…I won’t use the phrases “shabby chic” or “Paris Apartment” since they usually connote very cruddy, ugly junk).
Well, anyway, I’ve very glad the market is there!
Can you fit in more vendors or are you completely full? I wouldn’t mind seeing a touch more variety.
what is that garbage can with the pink frill and mirror that that little girl is holding!? I WANT THAT!
