Over on Brooklynian, one concerned resident of Prospect Heights has been trying to raise awareness (and enforcement) about the dangerous intersection of Washington Avenue and the northern side of Eastern Parkway. It seems that drivers have been plowing through the crosswalk when they make a right turn, ignoring the Yield sign. The poster has been trying to get NY1 and the cops to pay attention, but to no avail. Anyone else aware of this as a problem? We’ve had times crossing that stretch with the kids where we didn’t feel too safe.

  1. The big problem here is cars westbound on Eastern Parkway, turning right onto northbound Washington. There is just enough room between the main road way and the pedestrian crosswalk in question for cars to accelerate and surprise (or be surprised by) pedestrians…

There is a plan – which has been funded for 5 years! – to formalize these intersections, extend the median, put in pedestrian crosswalks and bike paths, and remove the crazy car slip-offs. But it has not started yet!

In the mean time, by all means, a crossing guard or police officer would do a world of good…

  2. I don’t understand why NYC DOT doesn’t paint more traffic flow or lane indicators on the asphalt. In the UK, these are everywhere (almost too much so)– but they really do help drivers avoid dangerous last minute manuevers because they chose the wrong lane in the absence of good information.

  3. vanderbilt/atlantic is scary even for drivers! what a mess! I see so many cyclists risking their lives crossing there, I wonder whether they see half of the cars that nearly kill them from behind! I used to cross there on my bike, but stopped after a few close calls.

  4. I pass there twice per day. The entire Eastern Parkway-Washington Avenue intersection is an experience. Its a zoo for everyone, lol. You have the regular drivers, some of whom are maniacs who have no regard for yeild signs nor stop signs. Sometimes they run reds too. However, you also have pedestrians, some of whom are daredevils who cross during the ‘Dont Walk’ sign. Its one of those NY intersections where everyone does their own thing, at their own peril/joy depending on the outcomes.

  5. i live on that corner, the whole intersection is a disaster waiting to happen. not only the yield onto the service road, but also trying to cross eastern Parkway at Washington towards McNair Park. drivers try to “beat” the left turn signal and routinely crash or hit pedistrians. so far no one as been killed. yet.

as for rob, shut the fuck up for once in your life. i’ve almost been hit at that intersection dozens of times, it’s real, and if there’s even a 1% chance people dicussing it on a site like brownstoner will actually lead to something getting done, then I don’t want your bullshit getting in the way of that.

  6. it’s a friggin death trap. any parent who has been there more than 5 minutes walks up to the light in front of Turner Towers to cross there.

what’s needed is a left turn signal from eastern onto washington, like the left turn signal from washington onto eastern.
