Over on Brooklynian, one concerned resident of Prospect Heights has been trying to raise awareness (and enforcement) about the dangerous intersection of Washington Avenue and the northern side of Eastern Parkway. It seems that drivers have been plowing through the crosswalk when they make a right turn, ignoring the Yield sign. The poster has been trying to get NY1 and the cops to pay attention, but to no avail. Anyone else aware of this as a problem? We’ve had times crossing that stretch with the kids where we didn’t feel too safe.

ugh, I hate that intersection. There is no walk/don’t walk sign… you just have to look at the traffic signals to the left or right of you and go for it.
“Tybur6: For the record — I never suggested there was a Walk/Don’t Walk signal…. but there is a RIGHT TIME to cross any and all of the segments contained in this intersection. And there are TWO segments.”
If you are crossing Washington Avenue, when is the right time? If the cars traveling on Washington have a red light, then the cars on Eastern Parkway have a green, and they are turning right through the crosswalk. Perhaps you can define with specificity when the right time is.
“Tybur6: There is NOTHING dangerous about this intersection.”
Actually, the statistics show otherwise. Look at Crashstat.org and you can see that all along Eastern Parkway, where you have these similar type of intersections, you have accidents.
From 1995 to 2005, crashstat says there were 27 reported pedestrian accidents at this intersection, with 1 death, and 13 bicyclist injuries.
“Tybur6: For the record — I never suggested there was a Walk/Don’t Walk signal…”
Yes, but you did suggest that anyone concerned about the safety of the intersection was a self-entitled complainer.

All of the crossings for Eastern Parkway DO have walk signs.
Tyburg, please put down the crack pipe.
Apparently this bears repetition: THERE IS NO WALK/DON’T WALK SIGN!!!
There are some streets in NY where you have to be an expereinced J-walker to get across.
The saddest crossing story I’ve seen happened @
Tillary St. @ Pierrepont (adjacent the BP Library – it is a crossing nightmare)
The problem:
There are 3 stop lights working individually for traffic coming from three different directions turning onto Tillary Street (going East(i believe).
The key for the pedestrian is to start walking as soon as the light changes AND time your walking pace with oncoming vehicles…If your timing is off, or you do not know how to j-walk, you will be there for ever trying to cross the street or you will get hit by a car or bus.
One day as I approached the intersection a woman stood at corner of Tillary and Pierrepont sobbing uncontollably…because she couldn’t get across the street. At first I thought someone had mugged her. She was not an experienced J-walker and the intersection is downright dangerous. I had to ask her twice what she said because I could beleive she said “I can’t cross the street.”
I chuckled, but took her by the hand and we ran across the street (dodgeing a turning bus)..safely.
the northeast & southeast washington sides have the walk/dont walk signs. I cant recall if the museum side of washington has the signs.
This intersection, which I walk past every day but go further down Washington to cross the street because its such a clusterfuck, doesn’t have a cross/dont cross sign. So, while the comments about not walking when it says don’t walk would normally be good advice, is pretty unhelpful because this particular intersection is just a free for all.
Getting a designated “cross” there would be massively helpful. At the very least, if you get mowed down by someone failing to yield they would clearly be in the wrong when lawsuits come out. As it is, you just take your chances that you’ll make it…kind of like Frogger.
