unicorns-film-fest-052814The Brooklyn Film Festival is back for its 17th year with 107 films. The international festival includes some films about or made in Brooklyn, including a short documentary called Third Shift, which follows two former Domino workers who return to the now-defunct factory space. The theme of this year’s festival is “formula,” as in what is a winning formula to create a successful independent film? Or can film be formula-free? Aside from an invitation-only party tonight, the festival starts May 30 and runs through June 8 at indieScreen, Wythe Hotel and Windmill Studios, all in Williamsburg. The festival ends with an awards ceremony. The full lineup can viewed here. Above, a still from opening night narrative feature length film “I Believe in Unicorns.”

  1. There’s a great feature film at the Festival shot in Park Slope entitled VICTORIANA about a young couples’ Dostoyevskian nightmare. The couple begins the classic dream of renovating a rundown brownstone (a SRO) that takes a chilling turn of events when the owner is involved in a confrontation with the remaining tenant. Faced with financial ruin, the couple makes a fateful decision that launches an investigation by the police, and forces them to confront dark truths about themselves and their marriage.

Directed by Jadrien Steele, a Brooklyn based film maker, VICTORIANA was the winner of the Cinequest 2014 New Visions Award.

It’s being screened at the BFF in Williamsburg @ 8 PM Saturday June 7th. The film trailer can be viewed on the BFF website or go to youTube and search for VICTORIANA-trailer.

Renters and homeowners alike can identify with the film. Go see it!!
