  1. Aldi owns a percentage of TJs.

I once did almost all of my weekly shopping at TJs, but since I moved to NY I haven’t set food inside one. I have to say that I’ve adjusted away. I’ll be curious to see if I find myself returning, especially when I know that this place will be unbelievably crowded for at least the first three months.

It’s too bad that TJs doesn’t understand that it’s markets are really popular and respond accordingly by opening more stores.

  2. Are they owned by Aldis? If so, that’s scary because when I lived in the midwest, Aldis was one of the scariest markets ever… Makes C-Town look fancy.

Will say the interior looks like Union Station in L.A. Wonder if anyone in charge of leasing the retail space at One Hanson Place will look to this rehab as an example.

  3. anyone remember TJ’s on the W.Coast before it went mostly private label and owned (i believe) by Aldis? Nostalgic for that great market of small brands, constant rotation of new discoveries. Now it just feels bland and predictable. *sigh*

  4. TJ’s is going to be great. they are also in the process of gutting the 3-4 smaller buildings to the left of the old bank which, i assume, will also be part of the new grocery store.

  5. It looks like it will be beautiful inside. Speaking of dropping things (beware bad segue), I noticed last time I walked by that there were pigeons hanging out above the door. They might need an awning a la the BAM to protect unsuspecting shoppers as they enter and leave.

  6. Trader J’s doesn’t do a fish or meat counter so no need to drop those joints from your local purveyors. That being said, some of TJ’s fresh-packed meat and fish is pretty damn good.
