I found Purple Yam food disappointing both times I’ve been there. Nice place, Nice owners, food doesn’t measure up to the hype.
Waiting in line for a really long time is an automatic disqualifier for me, I don’t care for what.
Tom’s has the ‘vibe’
Tom’s is all about the pancakes (which are awesome) and the cozy vibe — bringing you coffee and orange slices while you wait on line, giving quarters to the kids. But I wouldn’t order anything other than breakfast.
the waffles and pancakes w/ fruit toppings at tom’s are excellent.
the turkey burgers suck.
I live around the corner from Tom’s and cannot for the life of me work out what all the fuss is about. I’ve eaten there three or four times and regretted it every single one of them. The atmosphere is great but the food is lousy. And yet every weekend there’s a line out the door. Why?

Seems like it’s making Bklyn look overly downscale
uh, newsflash.. brooklyn IS downscale.
*rob*
Oh, and looking at Tom’s back wall, when I think of ‘best old-time diner’, I dont think of crab cakes and mango-walnut pancakes. Daily News sucks.
I guess if you get a downscale paper like the News you get downscale ‘restaurant’ reviews.
