This should be a crowd pleaser. The Daily News and the New York Times both have articles today about new legislation that will make it a lot tougher to convert front yards into parking lots. The Times notes that legislation to be voted on by the City Council this week will not only make it harder to get approval for a curb cut, it will step up enforcement of curb cuts that have already been made illegally. If all goes well, the DOT will be able to remove illegal curb cuts at the homeowner’s expense. If approved, the new bill would also prevent homeowners from paving over their entire front yards. [Curb cutting] is the bane of many people’s existence, said Councilman Vincent Gentile, a sponsor of the bills. It is an issue that is burning in people many times over, especially those that are affected by the curb cut and not able to park anymore.

  1. I’m not a fan of curb cuts but with affluence comes more toys–cars included. What annoys me is the clear need for parking with reduction of access.
Have you noticed that the Dept. of Traffic is arbitrarily eliminating parking spots without considering the ongoing need?

  2. Lawns and trees. Tap your heels three times and you might also wake up in Kansas. You didn’t decide to live in NYC for lawns and tress did you? If every house had its’ own private drive, we wouldn’t be having this conversation and no one would be complaining. But as most of your multi million dollar brownstones were developed during horse and buggy days your answer is the rest shouldn’t own a car? What communist coutry did you just come from? Please, tell me what else I should and should not do with private property and what else needs to meet with your approval within the privacy of my home?

  3. those with cars should be the ones suffering to find a place to put their gas guzzlers. there’s no need to own a car in brownstone brooklyn, so suck it up and pay for a parking garage. lawns and trees shouldn’t be lost to there stupid, selfish curb cutters. who wants to live surrounded by nothing but asphalt? ditch the car and get a bike or metrocard, you lazy tree-haters.

  4. Oh give it a rest. Stop complaining. You not the person who has to drive around an hour looking for parking. Plus if the person owns the house it is their business to do what the want. Who are you to say what goes. AS for the green space, they can add some planters and call it a day. Who is the city to mandate what you do wiht your front yard. WHy don’t they focus on the new building going on in the city and Brooklyn that is polluting our air. I don’t see anyone complaining about that.
