Crain’s filed this story late yesterday: “A local supermarket union will launch a campaign Tuesday afternoon to bring a 100,000-square-foot ShopRite to the Brooklyn retail center that Walmart is also eyeing for its first New York City store. United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1500 will argue that ShopRite’s wages and benefits outstrip those offered by Walmart, and that the supermarket would match Walmart’s promise to bring fresh food into the East New York, Brooklyn, neighborhood.” The site, at the Gateway II complex, is owned by the Related Cos.

  1. I’d love to see Walmart at City Point, or whatever the thing replacing Albee Square Mall is called.

Atlantic Center Target needs the competition.

Gateway already has a BJs, which is a membership warehouse like Costco and Sam’s Club.

  2. I realize – but the discussion sounds like it’s a Barnes and Noble and Borders opening across the street from each other.

The crux here is the much discussed need for more groceries in underserved areas, but I’m unclear on whether this area is indeed underserved.

  3. Shop Rite will not beat Walmart prices and you can thank the unions for that. And yes, Walmart offers far more merchandise than does Shop Rite.

We were told previously that the zoning for this site does not require anyone’s approval.
