In addition to our official national holidays like Labor Day, there are hundreds of unofficial “holidays” celebrating everything from beauticians to sunglasses to chicken pot pie. Following are some of September’s unofficial national holidays and the best ways to celebrate them right here in Brooklyn.

September 5 — National Cheese Pizza Day
Di Fara Pizza is the cultiest slice in Brooklyn. Domenico DeMarco emigrated from Italy in the 1950s and has been Brooklyn’s most dedicated pizzaiolo since the mid-1960s. Di Fara’s is a trek, and the small shop is usually crowded with hungry customers — DeMarco’s determination that everything be just so makes for a slow-moving line. But the trip, and the pizza, are an experience worth writing home about. For more on pizza in Brooklyn, check out part one and part two of our pizza roundups.

September 18 — National Cheeseburger Day
Dumont Burger is a cozy, casual Williamsburg eatery, and a great pick for those nights when you want nothing more than a burger and a beer. The signature burger comes on grilled brioche with boston bibb lettuce, tomato, red onion, and house-made pickles. You can also order a Chickpea Burger or a Turkey Burger. The burger here is thick, perfectly seasoned, and cooked exactly how you want it… locals call this one of the best burgers not just in Brooklyn, but in all of New York City. September 25 — National Lobster Day
For traditional New England comfort food in Brooklyn, look no further than the Lobster Joint. The place is known for its lobster roll, but you can eat the seafood in a variety of ways here—in a salad, soup, mac and cheese, and even shepherd’s pie. There’s also lots of other seafood to pick from, including oysters, crab, clams, salmon, and pollock. This is food best enjoyed at the communal patio tables outside. September 29 — National Coffee Day
Brooklyn Roasters, an eco-friendly, fair trade roastery and coffee shop, has its home in one of the old Arbuckle buildings on the Dumbo waterfront. The company roasts its beans on-site, and the formerly industrial space is kitted out in almost entirely reclaimed material. Come here after a jaunt through nearby Brooklyn Bridge Park, or head to the outpost near the Navy Yard in Fort Greene. For more coffee in Brooklyn, check out this post.
