Last night the Dumbo BID gained the support of Community Board Two’s Transportation Committee to set up a temporary public plaza along the block of Anchorage Place that abuts the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge. The plan calls for erecting temporary barriers blocking off Anchorage until the DOT moves forward with its permanent closure of street to connect the Archway with the Pearl Street Triangle. The BID plans to set up planters and signage for this summer and will hold a public meeting on the matter July 11th. Although 24 parking spaces will be lost on Anchorage, the DOT will create 24 new spots along Pearl and John streets. The DOT expects to implement the $20 million capital project, which includes restoring the belgian blocks on Anchorage, at the end of 2013/beginning of 2014. But as for this summer, no changes will be made to the street besides keeping it blocked off for pedestrians.
