Williamsburg activists have created a Kickstarter campaign to open up the now shut-down Engine 212, a historic Wythe Avenue firehouse, as a community center. The Kickstarter campaign is asking for at least $20,000; residents need $250,000 before renovations can begin. If all goes well the firehouse, which closed in 2003, will reopened as performance space for arts groups, a social services organization and a local non-profit. The Daily News points out that pols already pledged $1.1 million in construction funds but residents must raise around $500,000 by next June to collect it. As of this morning, the Kickstarter is almost fully funded.
