The Wall Street Journal has a story on the idea floated by Community Board 1 to impose a moratorium on the board’s (advisory) approval of new liquor licenses in Williamsburg and Greenpoint that quotes a spokesman for the state liquor authority as saying such a move is probably a no-go: “We can’t do a moratorium, we don’t think we can legally do them…The courts have told us we can’t just do a blanket denial for a whole class of licenses whether it be an area or a specific type of license.” Meanwhile, the article has quotes from Community Board 1 members who both support and oppose the idea of a moratorium, including a business owner and chair of CB1’s public safety committee, who says a moratorium would be “un-American.” The public safety committee may vote on the proposal within the next couple weeks, after which it would head to the full board for a vote.

  1. this seems really unfair to many bar and restaurant owners that are going to open potentially great places. many new bars seem to be way more upscale like hotel delmano or several of the new wine bars. restaurants are usually pretty quiet in nature anyway.

  2. Rob – you have never been to Williamsburg so STFU. As for bringing drinks into a bar is not frugal, its trashy…oh wait then again we are talking about you.

You live in Park Slope, you are 34 and have roommates and shop at a bodega. How do you know what a tomato costs at a grocery store?

  3. Rob is right, behavior is issue: both by owners who rock buildings til 5am; patrons who hang on street; people who piss on buildings, trees, dogs and cars.

CB1 making a statement. Frat party weekends suck if you sleep in the area.

This isn’t just about restaurants, which in willie-b are awesome i agree.

    Just about noise.

  4. “the problem is that people go who to williamsburg are trashy and don’t know how to behave. ”

says the guy who brings gatorade cheap vodka into bars so he doesn’t have to pay.
