Fridays at 11, Brownstoner Upstate brings you a selection of properties within three hours north, and a little east or west, of New York City.
Can you blame us for having winter sports on our minds? All we had to do was look out our window at nearly a foot of snow for inspiration. There are lots of places to ski in upstate New York, so if you’re hankering to live full- or part-time near snow-packed fun, maybe one of these properties will tickle your fancy.
This post and beam is located on 8 acres about four miles from Windham Mountain in Greene County. For the price, you get an old barn, a couple of silos, and a whole lotta land. Oh, and a six-bedroom house. Looks like a great base of operations for ski/snowboarding season, plus some privacy to boot. Beds: 6. Baths: 3. Square Feet: 2,544. Lot Size: 8.1 acres. Est. Taxes: $4,083. Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hours, 43 minutes (approximately, according to Google Maps. They’re all approximate and according to Google Maps. Please do a reality check before heading up).
And here it is, our official House Crush of the Week (yes, it’s a thing). This contemporary loft-design passive solar beauty is located in Elka Park, which we spoke of last week, a bit less than nine miles from Hunter Mountain. It’s so perfect, we can barely stand to sully it with mere words, so feast your eyes on the photos, including the shots of the property’s resident waterfall. Beds: 2. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 1,800. Lot Size: 4 acres. Est. Taxes: $3,909. Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hours, 45 mins.
Of course, we can’t talk about winter sports in the Catskills without talking about Belleayre Mountain. The village of Fleischmanns might technically be in a different county from Belleayre, but it’s only a few miles away, and there are lots of great properties in the area on the cheap, like this Colonial with four bedrooms right in the heart of town. It’s located less than four miles from the slopes, and given the price, we would see what we could do about updating the interior a little bit. We love the spaciousness of it, though, and the screened-in porch. Beds: 4. Baths: 2. Square Feet: 2,402. Lot Size: .28 acre. Est. Taxes: $5,244. Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hours, 43 mins.
Skiing in Sullivan County? Indeed there is, at Holiday Mountain in Monticello. It’s not as big as some of the others, but they have a water park and mini-golf in the summer. This huge circa-1948 ranch isn’t that exciting from the outside, but there are elements of the interior we really dig, like that great solarium room. Other parts…well, not so much. But it’s on a lot of land, it’s reasonably priced, and it’s less than nine miles from Holiday Mountain. Sullivan County needs some love, too. Beds: 3. Baths: 2.5. Square Feet: 3,320. Lot Size: 4.19 acres. Est. Taxes: $4,286 (or $5,986, depending on where you look). Distance from Brooklyn: 2 hours, 7 mins.
