garden
So this is where we stand heading into the weekend. Hopefully a couple of solid days today and tomorrow should get us pretty close to the finish line. Not the fence is 90% done and the wall and steps are showing some progress. The rest of the sod is going in today. The bench in the foreground needs to get built and the door to the neighbor’s still is to come. Hopefully big things to share with you on Tuesday.

  1. I just moved to Clinton Hill. Can anyone tell me whether there are any community gardens with space available near Kent Ave and Dekalb?

  2. Isn’t annoying to be thought of or spoken of badly. I troll where I please. And laugh at the effort put into a 16 by 30 space with the results I see here.

  3. Hey, bstoner,

Have you considered installing lighting and/or irrigation? Something to think about before completing the project. I just installed a 12 volt lighting system around the perimiter of my bstone backyard. Makes it very nice in the evening. Also installed soaker hose and sprinklers all on timer, to avoid having to water it constantly.

Electric and hose lines were buried a couple inches into soil and also covered up with mulch. You can do it as an afterthought, but would be easier to do now, before you finish the yard. I can safely say that both projects were very simple to do-it-yourself, as I am not the DIY kind of guy.

  4. Love the design. But am a bit worried about your sod. Those yellow/brown areas are a bad sign. It’s best to buy and lay sod in the same day. Agree with poster above that carefully prep of the soil is important. Some people go as far as to measure the pH of the soil so that they can adjust it (sometimes adding lime), however most Brooklyn brownstone backyards are already alkaline so that’s not often an issue. A nice thick layer of compost beneath the sod helps the roots get established. One tip: when the grass has grown enough to need cutting, don’t cut it too short. It can go into shock (especially when the weather is warmer) and you can easily kill the whole lot. I mentioned this source the other day: Mill Lane Nursery on Ralph Ave has good quality sod. Call ahead to reserve coz they often sell out on the weekends.
