While we were strolling around Gowanus for last week’s open studio tour, we passed Monte’s Venetian Room, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, making it Brooklyn’s oldest Italian restaurant. With such a history, we’re figuring the food must be pretty good — anybody know what their house specialty is? We’re wondering what we should order we stop in for dinner.

  1. MY UNCLES USED TO OWN THE WASTE PAPER RECYCLING PLANT ACROSS THE STREET FROM MONTE’S FROM THE EARLY 1950’S THRU 1968. I WAS LAST AT MONTE’S IN 1979. DO THEY STILL SERVE TRIPE?

  2. I am at Monte’s now and everything was exceptional and friendly and delicious. They have recovered the booths, upgraded the coffee and the food was superb. We will definitely be back!

  3. This used to be the neighborhood spot for baptism, first communion, baby shower parties. My friend said at one point she was there almost every Sunday for a family party.
Food is just average and there’s usually never more than 4 tables in there. Ricotta Cheesecake is good but don’t order coffee–it was instant coffee the last time we were there!

  4. Bamontes in williamsburg is older. Although the front is some crummy new rendition, the dining area is old-fashioned, the food is fine and the old waiters in their white coats are great.

  5. I have been going to Monte’s all my life. I have lived in the Slope now for 51 years. The food was always a small part of the experience of going out for a special day. I remember when Gentlemen checked their jackets at the door! You figure that one out! Mr. Monte is a character and is always pleasant to me and friends. My advise is don’t expect any more than red sauce southern food, and stick to the basics. My fav is the steak served with hot peppers, and of course the cheescake.

  6. I went last year for the first time since moving to the neighborhood 20 years ago. At least I can say that I went there once, because I WILL NOT GO BACK. It was terrible. There are so many great places here in Brooklyn. This place is not even trying as the previous post said. Save your money is all I can say!

  7. It may not be the best italian food in Brooklyn but I dont think Montes is that bad. Its very old school and there is charm in that and the food is fine. Some things are better than others.

  8. another time and place, i can dig. believe me, i do. i search for these type places all the time. because i love them.

but monte’s ain’t even trying. i wish they were, but they ain’t.

    and that’s a shame.
