Well, that was pretty crazy. (Or as the videographer in the second video on the jump said, “Holy Shit!”) It only lasted a few minutes, but sometime around 5:30 p.m. yesterday a small tornado touched down in Brownstone Brooklyn, wreaking havoc on many trees, cars and houses and leaving other spots virtually untouched. We took a walk around Clinton Hill in the aftermath and have included a lot of the photos we took along with a bunch sent in by readers. Thanks so much to everyone for sending them in.

  1. I’ve seen tornados and this was not a tornado in Brooklyn. Horrific storm yes, but unlikely a tornado. First with tornados, usually it stops raining and the level of destruction tears up homes not just old trees with shallow sidewalk roots.

  2. At the doc’s office this morning, some people were saying that in NYC, ‘inferior quality’ trees tend to get planted by the City and therefore they break/uproot easily in storms. Anyone have any idea if this is true or not?

  3. Yeah, unfortunately the actual damage is estimated at less than my deductible, so I did not even think of calling my insurance guy! I’m getting the whole roof redone since it’s over 25 years old and soft

  4. I am out of town but my backyard, which I spent lots of time and money on this summer landscaping is completely destroyed. Such a bummer. I have this giant tree that is almost gone, my neighbors trees collapsed into my yard. Can’t believe my house is not damaged. Kids were inside too. So crazy.

  5. “Snappy, what are those cops doing there? Are they interviewing the tree to get its side of the story?”

Ha! Actually, that wasn’t tree damage. Part of the roof over from a building on 18th Street was sucked off and carried in the wind over to 17th Street, where it landed and smashed the back of that SUV! It was nuts over here last night! Back in these parts, to only have downed trees would have been a blessing!

  6. Channel 4 showed a film where you can actually make out a funnel shape in the cloud. I know someone said the trees on my street were downed by lightning but they’re wrong. There were no lightning hits- I was right across the street and looking out the windows- there was no flash. But the wind was horrific.

    Sorry about the roof, cmu.
