For generations, Brooklyn’s outdoor pools have been providing just the right amount of chill to take away the summertime blues. This year, the facilities open June 27. For information about swim lessons available for those of all ages, to learn which city pools are handicap accessible, or to find out about lap swimming, visit the NYC Parks Department.

The Kosciuszko Pool (Bedford-Stuyvesant)
The Kosciusko Pool, located at Marcy Avenue and Kosciusko Street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, was designed by Bed-Stuy native Morris Lapidus (1902-2001). Its spacious dimensions (230 feet long by 100 feet wide) and adjacent wading pool make it a favorite for Kings County families. Pool hours are from 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m., with a break for pool cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Red Hook Swimming Pool (Red Hook)
The Red Hook Swimming Pool was one of 11 city pools built as part of the WPA program of the 1930s.  The pool’s dimensions—330 feet by 330 feet—and bucolic setting, combined with available lap swimming, attract serious swimmers from around the entire borough. Pool hours are from 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m., with a break for cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

McCarren Park Pool (Greenpoint)
Greenpoint’s McCarren Pool was originally designed to accommodate 6,800 bathers at a time. It was closed from 1984 until 2012, when a $50 million renovation made it useable once again. Now it is one of the most popular in the borough, with a generous length of 329 feet and width of 151 feet. Pool hours are from 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m., with a break for pool cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Brooklyn Bridge Park Pop-Up Pool (DUMBO)
The Pop-Up Pool at Pier 2 was designed in 2012 to be open for five seasons. The pool includes a beach, deck concessions, showers, and restrooms, and is free and open to the public.  It measures 30 by 50 feet and only 3.5 feet deep, perfect for families with small children. The Pop-up Pool is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and has different rules from New York City’s other public pools, which you can find here.

Located on Nassau Street between Navy Street and North Elliot Place, the Commodore Barry Pool is the centerpiece of the oldest park in the borough. The pool is a tidy 75 feet by 75 feet and features a wading pool for the younger set. Pool hours are from 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m., with a break for pool cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Douglas & DeGraw Pool (Boerum Hill)
As with many of the “vest pocket pools” built in the early seventies, the Douglas & DeGraw Pool at Third Avenue and Nevins Street features a wading pool for the toddler set. Because the pool is only 3-feet deep, it’s a great place for swimmers just getting started. Pool hours are from 11:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m., with a break for pool cleaning between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
