Brooklyn isn’t short on historic landmarks and sites. Thanks to a mobile app highlighting some of New York City’s architectural gems, you’ll have the opportunity to hunt for them yourself.
Urban Archive, an app that mines the collections of New York City’s institutions to create a mobile archive, is hosting a scavenger hunt along with food, drinks and a prizes to encourage people to explore history.

The history-based hunt will center on Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights, with an exact starting location to be revealed to participants at a later date via email. The event is timed to honor the recent opening of Brooklyn Historical Society’s Dumbo annex.
“The Brooklyn Historical Society was one of Urban Archive’s first institutional partners, and we’re celebrating the opening of their new DUMBO space at Empire Stores. We’ve also just finished adding over 2,500 photos from the BHS John D. Morrell collection, spanning Brooklyn Heights to Brighton Beach as they appeared in the late 1950s — this event is a showcase of some of those images, and a fun way to dig through the lesser-known corners of one of Brooklyn’s oldest neighborhoods,” said Ben Smyth, one of Urban Archive’s founders.

The hunt will involve about two miles of walking. Teams should consist of two to four people, and at least one team member will need an iPhone (with iOS 10.0), along with the Urban Archive app which you can download for free here.
The hunt’s slate of activities will start at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 7. It will begin with welcome drinks and instructions, the hunt itself will kick off at 6:45 p.m. Prizes will be awarded and drinks served when the hunt ends at 8:30 p.m.
