The Burg’s New B.A.D. Habit
131 Grand Street (near Berry Street), Williamsburg
The menus posted on the windows of the soon-to-open 24-hour breakfast spot B.A.D. (“Breakfast All Day”) give us a glimpse “into the future of warped Williamsburg brunching,” says Eater. They’ve posted the whole menu, complete with eggs, pancakes, a DIY waffle bar, and entrees like the Machete (“mac and cheese and eggs plus side”), BBQ Shrimp Pancakes, the Bad Burger (“chicken fried burger wrapped in bacon w/blue cheese”), and Three Dog Night (“3 hot dogs wrapped in a giant tortilla, guacamole, American & Swiss cheese, fajitamix”). Hungry yet? Eater says, “looks like she’s getting ready to open sometime very soon.” Photo by Eater.
More Brooklyn Restaurant Openings
We mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Mama Rosa’s Latin Bistro was setting up camp in the old Maria’s Mexican space (669 Union Street), and now Zagat is reporting that Mama Rosa is officially open: “Diners can expect a similar menu to Los Pollitos III, which shares the same owners, but with more of a Spanish and Colombian influence.” … Zagat also reports, “As of September 10, Park Slope will welcome a branch of UES Japanese noodle shop Naruto Ramen, which is taking over the former 3r Living digs on Fifth Avenue.” … The always-busy Ditmas Park Blog shares a photo of the progress at Cafe Madeline (which is set to open next to Abacus Realtors between East 16th and East 17th), reports on the neighborhood’s forthcoming ice cream parlor, to be called The Old Fashioned, and says that Catskill Bagel should open the week after Labor Day.
A Carroll Gardens Institution: The Smith Union Market
The Carroll Gardens Diary shares the 65-year history of the corner store on Smith and Union and if you live in the neighborhood, you’ll want to read the whole thing. Here’s a tidbit: “It wouldn’t win the prize for ‘most inviting,’ especially compared to the shinier places that move in and attract the buzz, but there really is no denying that this corner’s got character. And that’s with or without the actual characters loitering outside day in, day out.”
After the jump: Brooklyn Farmacy at the Flea and on TV, Strong Place, Seersucker, and a Metromix event you’ll want to put on your calendar…
Brooklyn Farmacy: On TV and at the Flea
513 Henry Street, Cobble Hill
Brooklyn Farmacy‘s Facebook page gives a shout-out to the TV show that helped fund its renovation: “The Construction Intervention episode featuring Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda Fountain airs THIS THURSDAY, Sept. 2nd at 10am on the Discovery Channel… We are going to tape the show and plan to have a viewing in-store later this month, but thought some of you may want to catch it in ‘real time’.” Plus, Off the Presses reports that Brooklyn Farmacy is opening an egg cream cart at the Flea.
Recently Reviewed: Strong Place, Seersucker
Betsty Andrews for the New York Times shares her favorite dish at Strong Place (270 Court Street, Cobble Hill): “the best move is the fried oyster sandwich ($10): soft-bellied, masa de harina-crusted fatties loll on a pillowy split-top bun with fresh slaw and flowery chervil tartar sauce. It’s crunchy, snappy, soft, salty, creamy, herbaceous and umami all at once.” … Meanwhile, fellow Times writer Pete Wells checks out Seersucker (329 Smith Street, Carroll Gardens): “In truth, the kitchen’s light touch can be its weakness. Black-eyed peas on the vegetarian plate were woefully under-seasoned, if they were seasoned at all; deviled eggs needed a little more devil in them… But an insanely creamy rice pudding with blueberries ($7) would be absolutely winning anywhere.”
Mark Your Calendar: Hot Plates Live
Metromix is hosting their next Hot Plates Live event at the Bell House on Monday, September 13 from 6-9pm. Tickets are only $15, and attendees will be offered free tastes from Brooklyn spots like Benchmark, Blue Bottle Coffee, Branded Saloon, Carino, Fornino Park Slope, Mile End, Osteria Il Paiolo, Radish, St. Anslem, and 1 or 8. (More restaurants will be added as the event gets closer.) We went to the last event and loved it meeting the chefs and tasting their specialties totally turned us on to a bunch of restaurants we might not have checked out otherwise.
Looks like a greek place Athena will open on Smith where El Pitayo was. They had one of those light beam signs shining on the sidewalk last night.
