Brooklyn’s Best Sandwiches
New York magazine posted a slideshow of The 101 Best Sandwiches in New York, and the list included a bunch of Brooklyn-based sammies. It’s not clear whether they’re ranked in order of preference, but the #1 slot goes to the Smoked Brisket at Fatty ‘Cue. The many other Brooklyn favorites included the Panelle and Potato Special at Ferdinando’s Focacceria (pictured above, photo by Melissa Hom) and the Ruth Wilensky at Mile End.
Coming Soon: IndieScreen
285 Kent Avenue, near South 2nd Street, Williamsburg
Every time we visit the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin we wonder, “Why don’t we have a movie theater that serves food and beer at home in Brooklyn?” Well, now we’re getting one, and it’s called indieScreen. “The small theater — it only has 12 rows, 93 seats and a 17-foot-by-8-foot screen — is expected have its official opening as an independent film house in late June,” the Brooklyn Paper reports. And Gothamist says it’ll offer “a bar, a 96-seat restaurant (here’s the menu), and live music from time to time. And for parents, it looks like they’ll be screening kids movies every Sunday.”
Hot off the Press: The Frankies Cookbook
Eater reports that pre-orders of The Frankies Spuntino Kitchen Companion & Cooking Manual have already been sent out: “And as mentioned earlier, indeed she is a beauty. For those craving some face time with eponymous chefs Franks Falcinelli and Castronovo, who also own the recently two-starred Prime Meats, they’re holding a book signing party and gallery show with author Peter Meehan and illustrator (and former Spuntino waitress) Sarah Rutherford at Brooklyn’s Cafe Pedlar on Sunday.”
After the jump: What’s cookin’ at the Greenpoint Food Market, the delicate issue of supermarket “sell-by” dates, more food vendors for the BKLYN Yard, the evolution of Night of Joy, and secret fish tacos in Williamsburg…
Quick Bites
The New York Times visits the Greenpoint Food Market, shares a taste of the treats offered there, and discusses the legal issues of selling homemade goods without a permit or commercial kitchen… It’s totally legal, however, for the owners of a Brooklyn Heights Key Food to change the “sell-by” date on supermarket meat, says the Brooklyn Paper… The BKLYN Yard tells Grub Street that they’re “making more of an effort to pair vendors like Hallo Berlin, Pizzamoto, Van Leeuwen, and the Dessert Truck with D.J.’s on a ‘quasi in-house’ basis.”… The New York Post tracks the evolution of new Williamsburg bar Night of Joy from early construction to opening night… And, finally, Chowhound Phunwithphood discovers “amazing fish tacos… fresh tilapia grilled over hickory smoke” offered every Tuesday at the Gibson on Bedford and North 11th.

“I ate there with Caesar”
Julius or Augustus?
I ate there with Caesar. And one of his expelled carbon dioxide molecules still sits undisturbed on the counter there .. . .
Panelle Special rocks.
Benson, I used to eat Panelles there in the 1920’s with Abe Lincoln and Ginger
Rogers. And astronauts. So there.
You right about the picture. It’s incorrect, and I don’t know anyone who’s ever eaten a potato special.
Buttermilk and Kara;
If you want to get into the “I’ve been eating at Ferdinando’s” game, let me inform you that my father’s family lived across the street from Ferdinando’s. My dad (86) has been going there since he was a kid, and I’ve been going there for 40 years.
I repeat: the sandwich shown in that picture is the “pane panelle special”, which is what Ferdinando’s is famous for. Look at their menu and that is what is listed on it.
I don’t doubt that someone orders some special concoction, but that is not what is shown, and it is not what Ferdinando’s is famous for.
“The sandwich shown is NOT a “Panelle and Potato” special.”
Looks like a White Castle slider, actually.
italiana – I’m making a list of more Bay Ridge restaurants to run as ROTDs. Karam’s is on it, along with Skinflints and Schnitzel Haus. Let me know if there are any more I should check out — especially any newly-opened spots.
And benson – buttermilk is right. As carb-crazy as it sounds, I’ve definitely heard someone order panelle and potato together. So nice to see fellow Ferdinando’s fans here!
Doesn’t anyone serve a plain turkey on white with lettuce & mayo anymore?????
