Participate in documenting Brooklyn’s Black history with a new writing workshop from Voices of Lefferts. The ongoing free community project offers participants an opportunity to share their stories, receive feedback on their writing, and have their work featured in a journal.

The community history program begins on February 28 and runs every other Saturday until May 23. While two of the meetings are in person, the other five sessions are virtual.

The project was started in 2017 by longtime Prospect Lefferts Gardens resident and English professor Deborah Mutnick. Focused on life in the neighborhood, it was inspired by the Depression-era Works Progress Administration’s arts and writing programs, which documented life across America.

The culminating feature of each workshop has been a journal showcasing the work of writers, photographers, and designers from the community. The 15th issue of the journal was recently published and the next is currently in production.

The upcoming series looks beyond the Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood to explore Black history throughout the borough. Those interested in participating can check out info on the website or email Voices of Lefferts directly at info@voicesoflefferts.org.
