Artists from Fort Greene and Clinton Hill are coming together to put on an art display that’ll span public spaces and galleries — and all of it is walkable.
The Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership and the Fulton Area Business Alliance (FAB) are organizing the Fort Greene and Clinton Hill Artwalk, which will feature work from more than 35 local artists in area businesses, galleries and public spaces. Participants this year include Hadas Gallery, the Candy Factory, Tipsy and DC Optics.

Meet all the artists in person where their works are on display when the program kicks off on Saturday, May 20. That day, there will also be a slew of family-friendly events and activities at Fort Greene Park, Putnam Triangle, and the Navy Yard’s BLDG92.
Activities include art demonstrations, interactive art, tours at BLD92, and face painting.
The event is about community and working together, according to Artwalk’s curator, Ramona Candy.
“While there is no theme per se, the works are representative of renewal, joy, power, fantasy and collaboration,” she said.

Artists featured on the walk this year include Christopher Quinones, Brittan Blasdell, Alexa Tejano, Vincent Ballentine, Katie Merz, and Maria “Toofly” Castillo. Art will span many mediums, including street art, murals, photography, sculpture, painting and performance art.
The organizers decided to put on the event after art collective South of Navy Yard Artists (SONYA) disbanded in 2016, putting a stop to their 17-year-old annual SONYA Artwalk, which took place in the area.
“For 17 years, SONYA’s Artwalk was the neighborhood’s premier self-guided public art experience, bringing together art lovers and community members to experience works, meet artists, and dine and shop at local businesses,” said Meredith Phillips Almeida, Executive Director of the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership in a statement. “We’re proud to join with FAB to honor this legacy by creating an event that highlights our dynamic arts community.”

The Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership seeks to assist small businesses and community members in Brooklyn through economic development initiatives. Earlier this year, they hosted a similar community arts event for Black History Month.
The exhibits will be up for a month, from May 20 to June 21. All events are free.
