The greenest thumbs in Brooklyn can be found on stretches of MacDonough and Hoyt streets, according to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The organization named MacDonough between Stuyvesant and Lewis avenues in Bedford-Stuyvesant and Hoyt between Atlantic Avenue and State Street in Boerum Hill the winners of its 13th annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest. MacDonough Street took top honors among residential blocks, while Hoyt was cited as the borough’s greenest commercial block. “Our hard work and commitment to keeping our block beautiful has had many positive results, including cars slowing down to take in all the surrounding beauty, said Wilma Atwell, MacDonagh Street’s Greening Coordinator. More than 230 blocks participated in the contest this year.

  1. This is really a great contest and greening effort by the Botanic Gardens. 230 blocks paarticipating is significant and while not every block needs to sign up, all us Brownstoners should focus on greening efforts. I think Brownstoner should help to get a bigger beautification effort going next spring. Perhaps a section on this site with gardening tips abd inspiration?

  2. Congrats to the MacDonough st. block association! I know it’s hard work to get neighbors motivated so this is big in terms of ‘neighborly’ dynamics.

Congrats again. Bedford Stuyvesant is still the best kept ‘secret’ in brooklyn.

To the other poster that mentioned that folks still want to consider the area a ghetto – I say let them. We know the truth and for the time being we can keep the gentrification down to a minimum.

  3. Thank you. As Bee has said, it is an honor to be selected, and a true privilege to live on the block. I’m a newcomer (just moved to Macdonough between Lewis and Stuyvesant from Clinton Hill in April), and couldn’t be more pleased with my decision to move from my coop into a brownstone. Actually, this site was very influential in my decision to make the jump. A lot of great people, advice, and wisdom helped me realize that I could do it! And so I did. Wow!

  4. Congrats to McDonough St, truly one of the most beautiful blocks in Brooklyn. Beautiful row houses, St.Phillips Church, Akwaaba Mansion and the above double house, and other free standing mansions. A veritable architectural feast. A lot of hard work, diligence and pride went into this. Kudos to the other Bed Stuy blocks which were also mentioned.

While all the other areas of Brooklyn are certainly great, I’m very proud of the Bed Stuy blocks for proving that this is indeed a beautiful neighborhood, and that pride of place has been in place for years, and will continue to be so in the future. Congratulations to all.
