This one might not make the police blotter reports but a basil thief is upsetting the equilibrium on one block of Carroll Gardens. According to Lost City, someone has been stealing basil from a planter box in the front yard of a house on President, causing multi-generational distress: “The children are quite disturbed by your actions. And so are the adults,” reads the postscript to a sign telling the thief to “Stop taking our basil!” Any word on whether the culprit has been apprehended yet?
OMG, I live in BALTIMORE and someone stole my basil yesterday, in broad daylight!
Clearly this thief has migrated south.
The blog wasn’t created by us, the basil family.
I have no idea who did, but I find it just a sweet attention to detail of who took the picture.
Some funny spice and herb lingo going on this, I have to say, however, the few offensive people should take some of that anger to bigger issues in the world and lay low on basil-based summer blog.
That is so interesting how all kinds of spices got out of the reactions.
I understand we all have different sensibilities but I think to wedge agressivity on this box-of-basil blog is a bit out of place. No?
Anyway…
HERE IS THE ENTIRE LITTLE STORY:
My children (6 and 8 y.o.) planted the basil in a box in front of our studio. They were very happy with the way it looked (and smelled!). Soon, plant by plant started to be taken at night. A big carved (visibly with a sharp tool – so, no squirrels) hole was left every time.
My kids were (yes) disturbed that someone would take the entire plant night after night and my 6 years old boy wrote the sign saying “PLEASE, STOP TAKING OUR BASIL. IT IS CHEAP AND YOU CAN BUY YOUR OWN”. I wrote under in small letters “The kids are quite disturbed…”.
The entire box was taken, plant by plant.
We wouldn’t care if all was gone little by little, if people would take leafs at time. That would be fun to observe. Now, to take the whole plant, and the whole box like that?
Yes, the kids were quite disturbed. and so were the adults. Neighbors included.
My next door neighbors also had their freshly planted flowers taken from their box… kinda not funny anymore, we all think down here at the “crime scene”.
My guess is that some cartoon-like old lady wakes up at 4 am everyday and goes to her “imaginary garden” to do some work. I just would not like to know that someone would take it all in a self absorved intent, with or without the kid sign on it.
The end (of basil).
Bklynsofar, that was a hoot and about sums it up! 🙂
I got a good one. Large branch falls from tree in CG partially obstructing traffic. NYFD comes and blocks off street. 5-6 fireman remove branch from tree and begin cutting it up. Homeowner exits home in front of fallen tree with child in stroller. Homeowner returns 20 min later and tree is chopped up. Fireman gone. Truck gone. Homeowner’s bicycle which is chained to wrought iron stairs is stolen by someone with bolt cutters. I’ve chained bike to my stairs for 4 yrs. I have jr high kids walking by house 9 months a yr. Never had a problem. School has been out 2 weeks. Several people on street have bikes chained to fences on same street without any problems yet when the Happy Hookers show up i lose a bike. Coincidence??
Good, Vinca. Let there bean light.
If not full circle to the Beetles (let it bean!), then must be the dawning of
the Age of Asparagus.
Had to wait until now to chive in…
Embasils we are, says the chief !
We have shown irreverence to the concerns of a basilically nice person.
No one should be embasiling these people’s basil.
I hope someone manages to cabbage the thieves.
I yam sorry. Sometimes we cantalope ourselves.
We have mushroom for improvement.
