That’ll teach us to sit on a story! We’ve known for a couple of weeks that Barney’s Co-op was going to be taking the retail space at Two Trees-owned 194 Atlantic Avenue (next door to Trader Joe’s) but were persuaded to sit on the story until the lease was signed. Looks like that didn’t work out too well for us: Barney’s gave the story to WWD which ran it behind its pay wall yesterday and Racked picked it up. Nice guys finish last. Great news for this stretch of retail though! Anyone know what level of rent this got done at?

  1. I had a job at Barney’s when I was in college and they had their store in Chelsea. I folded ties. I saw Walt “Clyde” Frazier there one day. I remember thinking “Barney’s is going to make some money today.”

  2. jessibaby I know it’s not the warehouse…i meant that they (the store in Chelsea at least) pretty much constantly has a lot of stuff on sale. I also find it’s not quite as picked over as the stuff is by the time it makes it to the warehouse sale.

  3. I live in the area and I will DEFINITELY be shopping there. I think this is the best curated store in the city. A little pricey, but often has great sales. All I need now is a Sephora and I never have to go into Manhattan again (except for that pesky thing called work).

  4. Barneys Co-op does not = Barneys warehouse sale. The store on Madison has a floor that is all Co-op — it’s just the younger, less pricey labels that the store carries. The Co-op locations in Soho, Chelsea, UWS all carry the same stuff you can buy on the Co-op floor of the main store — presumably this will also be the case on Atlantic. I’m excited, but nothing can beat my Tango.

  5. I’d think given the demographic of the neighborhood and the foot traffic it’d do pretty well here, but who knows. Personally I’m very psyched about this development–if you dont mind investing the time to poke around a bit you can get designer stuff marked down like 70-80% (so it’s only mildly instead of absurdly expensive).

  6. Comparing Barneys Co-op to Filene’s Basement or Old Navy is somewhat misleading. Barneys Co-op is actually fairly pricey, though certainly less expensive than the flagship store. I have a hard time imagining that they’ll do well on Atlantic Avenue, but I hope I’m wrong.
