Divorce may be ugly, but these macaroons look just lovely. They come from Zana Café (on 7th Ave. near 9th Street), a bakery that was born when the once-married owners of Delices de Paris (321 Ninth St. at Fifth Ave.) split and ex-wife Rosana Rosa decided to open up her own shop. “At her new joint, she sells French-Italian pastries and European products — just like Delices de Paris,” the Brooklyn Papers reports. “And her walls are painted happy yellow — just like Delices de Paris.” Ex-husband Michael Martin, who is still working at Delices, isn’t happy about the copycat move — he posted a sign saying that he has nothing to do with Zana’s. This seems a bit odd, since Zana’s is already getting rave reviews — and certainly doesn’t seem to be tarnishing the Delices reputation. According to local blogger Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn, the lattes and macaroons at Zana Café are as delicious as they were at Delices. Has anybody else tried the new pastisserie?

The macaroons at Gerard Mulot in Paris set the standard (and his pistachio is not as deeply green as these appear to be in the photo). I’ll have to try them to see how they taste, and how they measure up.
p.s. There are really nothing at all like the “cocoanut macaroons” that most of us grew up with. They’re much better!
first thing I thought when I saw the green was how everything is green for st. pattys day. i was kind of grossed out by it, but then someone said pistachio…mmm..I’ll close my eyes and eat it. 🙂
I stopped into Zana’s last week during their “Pre-opening” phase and picked out a few pastries. Man behind the counter told me the products for sale there were, with a very few exceptions, produced elsewhere. Unless he was mistaken, Zana’s is essentially a retail baked goods store and not a patisserie or bake shop.
In Switzerland, where my dad is from, those macaroons are called “Luxemburgerli,” and you can get them at Sprugli on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich. They’re actually wonderful, and the green one is probably pistachio. Don’t judge them by their color. The inside is filled with a wonderful creme. I had some and spoke to Rosana when she just opened, prior to her even coming up with the name for the place. The Luxemburgerli, which she calls French Macaroons, made me homesick for Sprungli! My two year old son Jack loved em too!
Those macaroons do NOT look lovely. The green one, in particular, makes me want to hurl. How is that place getting rave reviews with food that looks like THAT?
