High rises are replacing parking lots in downtown Brooklyn. On 10 lots downtown, developers are planning a total of 3,800 apartments, including 650 affordable ones, according to Crain’s. There are also lots more parking lots in the area that are ripe for development.
In three blocks along Fulton just north of Flatbush are three sites in various stages of development. One is slated to be a health facility developed by New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council. The Gotham Organization has just started foundation work for a 586-unit, 52-story building at another. The third, the Dermot Company’s 66 Rockwell Place, a 326-unit, 42-story tower, started leasing late last year. (Above, 66 Rockwell Place under development in August.) Crain’s did not specify addresses for any of the properties.
Developers are also salivating over three lots near Macy’s, one owned by the department store and two owned by Edison Properties, although so far it is unclear if they are available, according to the story. The rebirth of downtown started with a 2004 rezoning, and as more people move into the area, the price per buildable square foot has risen seven times in three years. It is now about $350, said Crain’s.
It sounds as if there’s no need to mourn the loss of parking, since each building is required to have it. Do you think these high rises are a plus for the area?
