This was the scene at Boerum Place and Atlantic Avenue early Tuesday evening. Back in 2008, The Daily News noted that 28 pedestrians were hit in the preceding decade at the corner of Boerum and Livingston, just a couple of blocks away, and more recently we ran photos of Atlantic being shut down after a motorcyclist was killed a couple of blocks to the east of this.
The problem is, no one follows the lane rules. To me it looks like the guy was in the left turning lane and tried to go straight. There was probably a car in the lane to the right of him who was also going straight and the car above probably swerved at the last minute to avoid hitting the car to their right and plowed into post. People do that crap all the time at that intersection cutting off the straight lane only people and it becomes a mess.
We’ve got to stop building these car lanes. The drivers are totally out of control
probably swerving to avoid a douchebag on a bike running a red
i expect drive was in center lane on Boerum going south, which is marked for straight ahead, and tried to turn left, which is allowed only from left two lanes, not center he/she was in
Walking along the north side of Atlantic through that intersection feels like a death wish; walking along the south side feels slightly better. Cars are always hitting that intersection at like 40 mph, easy.
Also, I have a soft spot for the Boston terrier in Vans on the mural on the south side of Atlantic there–I’m always happy to see it hasn’t gotten crapped up by graffiti.
What happened there is what happens all day and all night: the driver in the line that leads to Boerum Place tried to make that left turn onto Atlantic. Everytime I am in that legal turn lane the car to my right (who should be heading down Boerum) tries to make that turn.
“Unless the driver was completely asleep/passed-out,” — or texting on their cellphone
Yeah, that intersection is the worst, I totally avoid it. Even when pedestrians have the light, you can’t actually safely cross because there are cars who have the light to turn at the same time.
This stretch of Atlantic Avenue in general is a real deathtrap. Just last night I was noticing how fast people drive down it, really almost highway speeds. I so wish the city would implement some kind of “traffic calming” measures, it’s such a pedestrian-dense area.
I walked by and couldn’t figure out how the hell that happened. Unless the driver was completely asleep/passed-out, it looked like a crazy angle to be hitting the pole.
That intersection sucks.
