An AP Writer With Much Love for Bklyn Heroes
It’s funny sometimes which Brooklyn restaurants the national press latches onto. Yesterday the AP ran a piece about a place called Carluccio’s in Bensonhurst, which is apparently “like a shrine to lost Brooklyn[…] where music of the ’40s and ’50s plays on an endless loop” and 153 different hero sandwiches are on offer. We’ve never even heard of this place (and neither have Google or Chowhound), but in the smitten writer’s words:
Hands-down, Carluccio’s Brooklyn Italian Heroes on 15th Ave. and 78th St. in Bensonhurst makes the best hero in Brooklyn. Don’t believe me? Zagat gave it a 23. Ronnie Carluccio has been on “Emeril Live” four times, where the half-mad chef tried to extract his hero secrets. People travel from all over Brooklyn, Staten Island, Jersey, Connecticut just to get heroes or catering from Carluccio’s.
Anyone live in the nabe and know this spot? Is it as much of a tourist trap as it sounds like, or does Mr. AP actually know his heroes?

Photo: Carluccio’s Italian heroes might look something like this one, captured on film by justinhenry. But it’s hard to tell, since there seems to be only one tiny photo of an actual Carluccio’s ‘wich online.
Boo hoo sniffle- a manager yelled at an employee. If it had been your over oreganoed salad you’d be whining about that. No winning in the Slope. IT IS ALWAYS SOMETHING!
Tempo Presto and old school heros aren’t at all the same food. TP is like Wichcraft and they have their place but we’re talking Italian heros. Not sure about my fav but long before everyone was talking about DiFaro’s pizza I stumbled in and had an unbelievable hero there.
This video calls Tempo Presto “the best damn sandwich shop in brooklyn.” Asks manager why he yelled at worker for oversprinkling oregano on a salad.

Nothing relieves a hangover and satiates hunger like an Esposito’s Italian Combo . . . Has anybody tried BBQing the Sputinis?
I’ll second Joe’s Superette on Smith Street. Gotta get the fried prosciutto balls while you’re there. A-maz-ing.
Denis Hamill is a regular columnist for the Daily News. It’s good to see him doing AP work as well.
They are good, the fresh soppresette(sp?) is amazing… Joe’s Supperette on Smith is legendary as well, or was, havent been there in awhile…
I second that. Really amazing subs at Espositos. Looks like the picture about. The price is reasonable considering what you get.
I love love love the italian sub’s at Espositos (The Pork Store) on Court St. The only problem is that they will charge you anywhere from $5-8 depending on who makes it.
