This just in from a reader:

I’m all for the First Amendment and the freedom to practice one’s religion openly; however adding on to an existing illegal balcony while hoisting beams and welding over an open sidewalk with no protection for the public just isn’t cool. Oh yeah, it’s illegal too! Called 311. They wanted to transfer me to a 911 operator, who after listening to me said this wasn’t an emergency & relayed me back to 311. The property is 123 South 8th Street and this is the second time I have seen this happen without recourse. You can walk along south 8th st, look up and see all the new extension because the bottoms aren’t painted or weathered. They look like new galvanized decking.

A check with DOB online shows no permits filed for this work. Update: This is classic. Of course by the time DOB made it out to the site, work had magically ceased.

  1. The DOB needs to change their rules so that pictures and video recordings count as evidence.

This has nothing to do with freedom of religion- if you need a balcony for your religious ceremonies than buy a damn house or condo that has 1 thats legal.

  2. They gotta be able to make them take that down. If you have an illegal curb cut, even if they catch it years later they can make you remove it so why can’t they do it with balconies?

  3. Even if work had ceased by the time the DOB got there, can’t they see that an extension was put on, verify a lack of permits to do so, then fine them? If that’s not allowed, then they’ll never catch anyone doing illegal work. Stupid.

  4. “How do folks get away with doing things like this? I can’t even replace a tub without my neighbors calling me in.”

because they have such political clout they can do/get whatever the hell they want.
