In early ’09, when many owners of condo developments were having trouble selling units, they began offering them to renters instead. But now, the buyers are coming back and the tenants’ leases aren’t up yet, says the New York Times. In order to show an in-use apartment to potential buyers, a real estate agent needs permission from the renters, “who are not as motivated as owners to keep it in museumlike shape for viewing… there’s often a wife, a baby and a nanny at home — and the corresponding toys and other evidence of family life.” (Of course, “evidence of family life” is an altogether different beast from the, um, “evidence of bachelor life” pictured above.)

The article cites several Manhattan landlords who are facing this situation, but has anyone noticed that this is becoming an issue in Brooklyn, too? And while it’s certainly annoying for landlords and potential buyers to deal with occupied apartments, isn’t it just as unpleasant for the soon-to-be-ousted renters?

  1. bxgrl – are you French or dyslexic?

But back to the post. They could simply wait until the end of the lease, stage the unit and sell it. Right? If they think they’re really losing that much in terms of selling price. Then the renters will be left alone.

  2. The max in NYS is 407$ per week- at a little over 1600$ a month, those of us on unemployment are struggling to pay rent, food, transportation, utilities and anything else. If you could just lower the rent to 500$ for that lovely 2 bedroom condo with the granite countertops and TuTu toilet, you’ll never have to look for a tenant ever again 🙂

  3. Montrose- you better duck 🙂

Perfect answer., BTW. Too many homeowners look down on renters, while wanting them to help pay the mortgage. I always hated the term “bitter renter.” But that’s a homeowners opinion, not a renter’s. The whole idea that both groups should be in conflict is self-defeating.

It’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out but I am sure you should find a nice closet to hide in until the villagers with pitchforks and torches leave. (You can use mine 😉
