It’s no secret that Applewood is serving some of the borough’s best food, but since the restaurant is a bit of a splurge for the low-budget gourmand we never had the opportunity to sample their adventurous cocktails. Thankfully, though, the inexpensive menu offered during Restaurant Week allowed us to taste a couple of their specialties. In their version of the Tom Collins, the gin was infused with tarragon, and the aromatic herb saturated the cocktail with an almost overpowering anise-like flavor. Simiarly, the cardamom-steeped vodka was the most intense flavor in their Maple Manhattan, a potent concoction that also included Maker’s Mark, maple syrup, and a dash of bitters.
When it comes to classic cocktails, we tend to be of the if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it school of thought but we were intrigued by these new spins on our old favorites. The Applewood cocktail menu has more to offer, too a Blood Orange-Thyme Margarita, a Savory Onion Martini, and the Lavender-Quince Cosmopolitans pictured above. Can any Applewood regulars recommend the best one of the bunch?

I can’t afford to go often, but I’ve never had a bad meal or bad service. And that pork belly appetizer is insane.
Every meal I’ve had at Applewood has been awesome (food and service). It’s sad to read that there’s a bit of a backlash going on. Though backlashes are usually a sign of success.
7th ave and 11th st in park slop
where’s applewood?
I didn’t like it much at all. I left very hungry.
I’m a regular and a fan. I find the food is reliably good, but the service is reliably weak.
Nope, have to agree w the others! We were totally underwhelmed when we went. I couldn’t believe it got written up in the New Yorker
Wow! Such dislike for Applewood. I have to say, I’ve been there about 15 times and have always had flawless service.
It’s a bit expensive but the quality of ingredients they use doesn’t come cheap.
Applewood is totally overrated. The food is good, but not remarkable. And the atmosphere really, really sucks.
