With lights on and Slurpee machines installed, a new 7-Eleven in Greenpoint appears ready to open any day now. It’s about time! It was exactly a year ago that signage first popped up in the window of the old Halpern-Perlow storefront at 883 Manhattan Avenue trumpeting the coming of the Slurpee chain. The build-out, however, has proved painfully slow. Given that many of the delis in this area tend to close on the early side, the 24-hour convenience of 7-Eleven may win it some fans; others will probably lament the arrival of another chain to a stretch that already includes a McDonald’s and Starbucks. How do you view this addition to the neighborhood? GMAP

  1. “Or do you want your really cool and hip new neighborhood to look exactly like the suburban town you left?”

Actually, in some cases – yeah, that would be nice.

It would be nice to actually have access to beer, cigarettes and snacks 24 hours. Bodegas are gross and overpriced (for most things)and aren’t always open 24 hours.

Gotta love the mentality that “if it’s in the suburbs, it’s bad for NYC”

Wish you’d all think the same way about cars.

  2. This is actually in the Landmark district. I guess LPC didn’t think too much of the 50’s storefront that was there. I’m sure 7-11’s design will be a welcome addition to the historic character of Manhattan Avenue!!

  3. “7-11 reminds me of being a kid in Southern California, riding my banana seat bike to buy Jolly Ranchers”

Lucky your city in SoCal had 7-11s!! We had to go to the Am/pm for our convenience store needs. Just not the same.

  4. While a new 7-11 might “mean” something in certain neighborhoods, I think it only makes Greenpoint even weirder. A Slushee come July will be a nice touch. Plus, as mentioned, this area has very little services open past 8:00 so in many ways it will be an improvement over what we have now.

If you have spent anytime in Hong Kong or other parts of the Far East, you have to have a soft spot for these perfectly air conditioned plastic pockets of American convenience in an otherwise foreign land.

I do find it weird that of all parts of Brooklyn, national chains seem to love this intersection for some reason over many more lucrative locations.

  5. “You’ll regret them later, dirty, when your triglyceride levels are too high. Pretty much everything sold in a 7-11!!!!”

It’s okay – I start my day heart smart with a bowl of whole grain cheerios.
