It seems like only yesterday we were announcing the imminent opening of a new cafe at 581 5th Avenue. (Okay, it was last October but you get the idea.) Now comes word and visual proof from a tipster that said cafe is no more and that the Marshal was involved in its eviction. A For Rent sign is now up in the window. Anyone know what happened?

I think the place with the yoga/art gallery is actually across the street and down the block a way. However, this place’s failure might have had something to do with the fact that the inside had as much warmth as a high school cafeteria. It was barren with bright, overhead fluorescent lighting that was anything but inviting. And as cottontop said, the coffee was lousy. I don’t understand the purpose of investing money and time into a business that pays no mind to the customers it intends to serve. No one, in any neighborhood (even one lacking a decent coffee shop) would be compelled to spend time in a place like this. And yes, Roots cafe is doing well~ they got it right. Great coffee, comfortable atmosphere, really nice staff.
The Marshal usually gets involved when rent isn’t paid.
And, the rent must go unpaid for several months in order for a landlord to get a ruling to close. I’m not a lawyer, but that’s what happened to a restaurant in the Village where a friend worked. The City Marshal came in at 6 PM, kicked all the customers out, told employees they had five minutes to vacate (whereupon they grabbed everything of value) and shuttered the place.
ps. can’t blame this one on the economy. Roots cafe 2 blocks away opened the same month, and they’re doing great. Good coffee, good atmosphere, nice people = success.
I live a block away so wanted this place to succeed. I went there once. ONCE. I knew right away that it wasn’t going to make it. They had really ugly sponge-painted beige/brown walls. Generic (i.e. bad) coffee. Absolutely nothing going for it except lots of empty space. I feel bad for them, but it just wasn’t going to happen.
Never saw anything about yoga.
“Anyone know what happened?”
Collapse of the MAB. Nothing supernatural.

“This one was big enough to hold classes and I think they did.”
Key word – “did.”
ENY — most of the other places aren’t big enough for yoga. Just watering holes for the apres-down dog crowd. This one was big enough to hold classes and I think they did.
Biff- great choice.
oh yeah and like someone else said… the money ran out
