NYC Tree Removal

A Brownstoner reader has a backyard tree that may need to be cut down due to developers making way for condos next door.

cbarm says:

An adjoining lot has been under construction with a new set of condos for most of the summer. This project includes a driveway that will run between my building and theirs. As the crew has begun to prepare to pour the driveway it has put a very large tree in my backyard at risk. I understand that this is unavoidable and for both the safety of my building and theirs I’m leaning to letting them remove it. My question for everyone is what should I demand from the builder to do this? A new tree is a must but is there any standard on how this is addressed?

If the homeowner allows the builders to remove the tree, can they demand a replacement? Share your thoughts in the original post.

  1. You need representation. A developer can’t remove trees because it’s “necessary.” They will try every trick in the book to bully you or sweet-talk you to get what they need. Speaking from recent experience, we received very fair compensation from a developer who was building next to our house, and who put our 100′ foot maple at risk. We had a contract with built-in triggers over a period of time.
