Time-Warner-Cable-versus-Verizon-FiOS

Here we go again. The eternal debate. Time Warner Cable or Verizon FiOS?

Start your engines. Go!

In the Brownstoner Forum, rd684 writes, “Verizon is getting ready to install FIOS on our block in Greenwood Heights. They’re currently contacting homeowners about running cable hookups to every bldg. I’m wondering what people’s experiences of FIOS quality for internet and TV are, especially in comparison to TWC, my current provider. I’m not ready to cut the cord.”

Just for the record, the Brownstoner office recently switched to FiOS.

  1. It’s not even worth debating: people don’t sign up for Time Warner Cable willingly, they put up with them until FIOS wires their neighborhood. I was a TWC customer for 8 years dealing with constant issues, including some where technicians contracted by TWC would “repair” my neighbor’s connection and cut me off (those are not TWV techs, as TWC is above it’s head with maintenance requests). In my current house, we have FIOS and I haven’t called customer service even once in the past 3 years. Oh, and also FIOS actually delivers on advertised speeds unlike TWC’s best effort (450kb/s download speed on a good day). When you compare TWC and FIOS, it’s not like comparing Windows/Mac and more like asking which one is better between a slingshot and a bazooka…

  2. We switch to Fios and it was well worth it. We switched last year after having TWC for a decade. For us TWC was very problematic, with both TV and internet service interruptions that seemed to happen every couple of weeks. In addition, the TV quality was not great and it felt like they throttled the internet speeds. Fios has been perfect for us with no service interruptions in the year that we have had it, better TV quality, lower cost, and faster internet. Topping off my bad experience with TWC, cancelling service was even more of a nightmare. It took 45+ minutes on the phone, I was transferred at least 3 times to multiple geographies. In the end no one at TWP told me that I needed to return my 5 year old basement router, nor did they bill me for the router. However about three months after canceling I received a call from a collection agency telling me that I owed TWC $90 or they would ding my credit… Needless to say I will never go back to TWC (even-though they send me junk mail every two weeks seeing if I want to switch back).
