From the Forum: Should a Coal Chute Be Sealed?
When water is infiltrating a cellar through a coal chute is it better to seal the chute or install a hatch?

A reader is contemplating sealing up the coal chute in their cellar and is debating the pros and cons of doing so. They are having water issues and while they know that closing up the chute would eliminate an access point to the cellar, preventing water infiltration seems more urgent. Should they permanently seal it or should they consider installing a hatch to allow continued access?
Please chime in with any advice.
